Granite City Brass is celebrating a remarkable achievement after securing first place in the First Section at the Scottish Brass Band Championships, held at Perth Concert Hall on March 8, 2025. The band delivered an outstanding performance of Morley Calvert’s Introduction, Elegy, and Caprice, impressing both the audience and adjudicators to claim the top spot.
This victory holds particular significance as it bookends Bruce Wallace’s incredible tenure as Musical Director. When Bruce took the helm in 2014, his very first contest with the band resulted in their first-ever First Section win. Now, 11 years later, his final contest has ended in the exact same way—another First Section victory. It’s a full-circle moment that reflects his lasting impact on the band and the journey they’ve shared together.
The adjudicators were full of praise for the band's performance. Dave Barringer described it as an “excellent performance with a stand-out Elegy,” highlighting how the “Elegy opens beautifully – Euph has style and panache – and solo horn continues this.” Mark Wilkinson echoed this sentiment, commending the band’s musicality and leadership, stating, “Lots to admire. A well-shaped reading from MD with confident soloists.” He also noted that “Euph plays with style and takes the dynamic risks.”
Adding to the celebrations, two band members received special recognition for their outstanding performances. Euphonium player Lewis Catto was awarded Best Instrumentalist, while Ben Williams was honored with the Thomas Macaulay Memorial Trophy for Best Horn. Their talent and hard work were shining examples of the commitment and musicianship within the band.
With this major contest win behind them, Granite City Brass now turns its focus to a year of celebration, marking an incredible milestone—its 175th anniversary. Founded in 1850, the band has undergone several transformations over the years, but its passion for music and dedication to the brass band tradition remain as strong as ever. Plans are already underway for a series of special events to commemorate this historic year.
At the same time, the band is beginning the search for a new Musical Director. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and enthusiastic conductor to build on recent successes and help shape the next chapter in Granite City Brass’s long and storied history. Anyone interested in the role is encouraged to get in touch via info@granitecitybrass.co.uk.
With a Scottish Championship title, a trip to Cheltenham ahead, and a historic anniversary to celebrate, 2025 is shaping up to be a landmark year for Granite City Brass. The band extends its heartfelt thanks to Bruce Wallace for his years of dedication and to all its supporters for their continued encouragement. The future looks bright, and Granite City Brass is ready to embrace the next chapter with enthusiasm and pride.
